Reading it, you will realize that truth really is stranger than fiction.ĭennis Covington is a journalist who was sent to Scottsboro, Alabama in 1991, to cover the trial of a preacher called Glendel Buford Summerford, who was charged with trying to murder his wife with a snake. But Salvation on Sand Mountain: Snake Handling and Redemption in Southern Appalachia is written as beautifully as some of the best of the novels I've reviewed, and does not lack for 'plot' or for 'characterization' either. When I started this journal, I didn't intend to review nonfiction books here.
